bio
Anja Hitzenberger is a photographer, filmmaker and video artist whose work focuses on the body and its relationship to architecture and space. She enjoys collaborating with artists from different disciplines on site-specific architecturally-aware pieces.
Her photography work has been exhibited in group and one-person shows in New York and throughout Europe, and published internationally in magazines, books and newspapers. She has created video and photography installations that have been presented in galleries and theaters as part of live performances around the world. Her film work has been seen at festivals throughout Europe, the United States, South America and Asia. She is also currently on the faculty of the International Center of Photography in New York, where she teaches Personal Vision photography classes.
She has received numerous grants, commissions and residencies for her work, including a Swing Space grant from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council to create "Changing Room," a site-specific photography installation with live performance ("the most bewitching part of the evening was the dance created by Ms. Hitzenberger’s camera" – The New York Times).
Anja co-directed "Barcelona in 48 Hours," — a short film made almost entirely out of black and white photographs that has screened in festivals across Europe, Latin America, the United States and in Asia. She also co-directed and produced a multimedia performance version of the film that was presented by Dance Theater Workshop (who also commissioned the work) in New York City, the ImpulsTanz International Dance Festival in Vienna, and the MODAFE Festival in Seoul, Korea.
Originally from Salzburg, Austria, Anja studied at the International Center of Photography in New York. In the 1990s, she worked part-time as an assistant to Austrian artist Kiki Kogelnik and at the foundation of the painter Robert Motherwell. During the same period, she was the resident photographer of Movement Research, documenting the Judson Memorial Church performance series.
"Hitzenberger is one of those rare talents who can successfully stop time with her camera, and then let it go at just the right moment." — Helmut Ploebst, Salzburger Nachrichten
